Cervical Cytology (Smears)

cerv

Cervical screening is an important part of preventing cervical cancer. It is offered to women and people with a cervix aged 25 to 64 years and helps detect any changes in the cervix early, before they develop into cancer.

What the test involves

  • The test is quick, simple, and usually painless.

  • A small sample of cells is taken from the cervix using a soft brush.

  • The sample is sent to a laboratory to check for abnormal cells.

How often to have the test

  • Ages 25–49: Every 3 years

  • Ages 50–64: Every 5 years

  • If you are overdue or have never had a smear test, please discuss this with any of our GPs or practice nurses.

Why cervical screening is important

  • Detects cell changes before they develop into cancer

  • Helps protect your long-term health

  • Enables early treatment if abnormalities are found

Cervical screening is recommended by the NHS and is safe, confidential, and free.
