First Contact Physiotherapy
We offer First Contact Physiotherapy (FCP) appointments provided by Mid Dorset Primary Care Network (PCN). This service allows patients with musculoskeletal (muscle and joint) problems to be assessed by a specialist physiotherapist as their first point of contact.
What is First Contact Physiotherapy?
First Contact Physiotherapists are highly trained clinicians who:
-
Assess, diagnose, and manage muscle, joint, and soft tissue problems
-
Provide expert advice, exercises, and self-management support
-
Refer for investigations or specialist care if needed
This service is part of the NHS and aims to help patients get the right care, first time.
What conditions can be seen?
You may be suitable for an FCP appointment if you have:
-
Back or neck pain
-
Joint pain (shoulder, hip, knee, ankle)
-
Muscle or soft tissue injuries
-
Arthritis or long-term joint problems
-
Recent strains, sprains, or mobility issues
What happens during the appointment?
Your appointment may include:
-
A detailed assessment of your symptoms
-
Physical examination, if appropriate
-
Advice on pain relief and activity
-
A personalised exercise or management plan
-
Referral for imaging, specialist services, or follow-up if needed
Who can access this service?
-
Adult patients with a musculoskeletal problem
-
You do not usually need to see a GP first
If your symptoms are not suitable for physiotherapy, the FCP will ensure you are directed to the most appropriate service.
First Contact Physiotherapy helps reduce waiting times and supports quicker recovery through early specialist assessment.
